Twins Break A Baseball Bat, Plant A Tree | Environment

For every bat a Minnesota Twins pitcher breaks that's swung by an opposing player, the Minnesota DNR and the Minnesota Twins promise to plant a hundred new trees.

Today crews will plant trees along the Luce Line State Trail in Plymouth and former Twins pitcher and broadcaster Bert Blyleven will be there to ceremonially plant the first one.

So far 130 bats have been broken so far this year, translating into 13,000 new trees.  The tree are being planted in Minnesota State Parks and recreation areas or along one of the 21 Minnesota state trails.  According to DNR officials, the Twins expect to plant some 16,000 to 20,000 new trees thanks to their "Break a Bat, Plant a Tree" program.

According to a press release, this new partnership between the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota State Parks and Trails is designed to promote outdoor recreation and environmental responsibility.
